U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent a letter to Mexico officials articulating how their current position on energy policies are undermining trust and confidence in U.S. investments and their commitment to the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). It appears that the United States has grown weary of Mexico’s policies to pull back energy deregulation, and this letter highlights those concerns.

The U.S. is Mexico’s top trade partner, and we hope that meaningful discussions will take place to address this expanding divide. However, with the inauguration pending and the transition of power in the U.S., who knows what priority the Biden administration and his new Secretary of State Antony Blinken will give these negotiations?
